Dental Health Tips for Dogs and Cats

Dental care is an ongoing and crucial part of your pet's health. Over 70% of dogs and cats over the age of 3 have some form of dental disease and fortunately this is very preventable by maintaining good dental hygiene in the comfort of your own home! 


Some ways of managing your pet's teeth to ensure they are healthy include: 

1. Brushing their teeth 

Like humans, pets can also have build up of plaque on their teeth. Regular brushing is the best way to keep your pet's teeth clean. There are 2 different brushes - with a toothbrush or a finger brush. These include some popular brands like Petosan, Dentipet and Prozym. 

2. Dental Treats 

Treats like Greenies and Oravet are great to use daily to pet's take to these very easily and they don't realise it's actually helping them keep their teeth clean.

3. Bones 

Raw bones are great for dogs for their dental hygiene. It can keep them occupied for a while and helps get the plaque off their teeth. Ensure bones are larger than the size of their head to avoid swallowing and choking hazards.

Avoid cooked bones as these can easily shatter and be swallowed and cause major damage to your pet's internal organs. 

4. Plaque Removal Products 

Products like Plaque Off and Aquadent are products you can add to your pet's food and water to minimise the amount of plaque building up on their teeth. They can be used regularly and are a great way to help with those fussy pets that really cannot have their teeth brushed or are not a fan of treats.

5. Dental Foods and Diets 

There are special dry foods you can use to assist with dental health for dogs and cats. The kibble is usually shaped in a unique way to remove plaque and tartar when eaten as well as having appropriate nutrition for your pets. This is another indirect way to ensure you pet's teeth are healthy without your pet realising!


Always remember to go for regular dental check ups with your vet! Leaving dental disease and plaque build up untreated can cause major problems down the line and can result in expensive procedures in the long run.
